How it works

Everything about 4-character links, signing in with a code, and what happens when a link expires.

Getting started

3 steps
  1. Enter your email. There is no password to create, store, or forget. If you have never used minify.pro before, the account is created for you automatically the first time you verify a code.
  2. Type the 6-digit code we email you. It is valid for 5 minutes and works only once.
  3. Paste a long URL and you get a 4-character link back instantly, ready to share.

Why the links are so short

A short code is four characters drawn from 62 possibilities: 26 lowercase letters, 26 uppercase letters, and 10 digits. That is 624 — about 14.8 million possible combinations. We hand them out in random order rather than counting upwards, so nobody can guess that X7y2 exists by assuming Aaa1 came first.

When a new link collides with an existing code we simply generate another one, so a collision is invisible to you and never overwrites somebody else's link.

What happens when a link expires

Every link is created with a 30-day lifespan. Once that passes, the link stops resolving and visitors see an "expired" page instead of being forwarded. A scheduled sweep marks them inactive shortly after, which keeps them out of search results and dashboards.

Deleting a link yourself has the same effect immediately. The destination URL is not sent anywhere once a link is expired or deleted.

Signing in

Sign-in uses a one-time code instead of a password. That means nothing to leak from a database breach, and no reused password to worry about — and it is why the same flow works whether you are returning or creating an account for the first time.

Safety checks

Before we store a destination we screen it against known malicious-URL feeds when a screening key is configured. Addresses that resolve to private or internal networks are rejected outright, so minify.pro cannot be used to probe your own network or to bounce traffic through a host that only it can reach.

Troubleshooting

My code never arrived

Check spam and junk first — automated mail is filtered aggressively. Confirm you used the exact address you typed. You can request another code after a short wait; each request replaces the previous one, so only the newest code is valid.

"That code has expired"

Codes are valid for five minutes. Go back and request a new one. Requesting a code also invalidates any earlier code, so this also resolves the case where an older email arrived after a newer one.

"Too many wrong guesses"

Five incorrect attempts destroys the code on purpose — that is what stops someone brute-forcing a 6-digit number. Request a fresh code and try again.

"Too many code requests"

Each email address is limited to a handful of code requests per hour. Wait for the window to pass rather than retrying, which would only extend it.

"New accounts cannot be created over a VPN or proxy"

Sign-up is refused from VPN and proxy addresses. Disconnect and try again. If you already have an account, signing in from those networks still works.

My link shows an expired page

It has passed its 30-day lifespan, or it was deleted. Create a new link for the same destination.

Still stuck?

If something is not behaving as this page describes, check that your link is on minify.pro and that your browser has cookies enabled — sign-in depends on them.
